Situ\u00e9 apr\u00e8s le d\u00e9luge et l\u2019alliance conclue avec No\u00e9, ce passage raconte l\u2019ivresse de No\u00e9, la transgression de Cham, puis les b\u00e9n\u00e9dictions et mal\u00e9dictions prononc\u00e9es sur les fils de No\u00e9. En examinant le texte h\u00e9breu, les nuances linguistiques des noms et les implications th\u00e9ologiques du r\u00e9cit, nous pouvons discerner plusieurs couches de sens qui \u00e9clairent sa place dans la Torah et dans la formation de l\u2019identit\u00e9 isra\u00e9lite.<\/p>\n<h3>Le contexte narratif et les actions de No\u00e9<\/h3>\n<p>Le passage commence en d\u00e9crivant No\u00e9 comme \u00ab un cultivateur du sol \u00bb qui fut le premier \u00e0 planter une vigne (Gn 9,20). Ce d\u00e9tail pr\u00e9sente No\u00e9 comme un pionnier de la viticulture, activit\u00e9 importante dans le Proche-Orient ancien. Mais le r\u00e9cit change rapidement de ton : \u00ab Il but du vin, s\u2019enivra, et se d\u00e9couvrit au milieu de sa tente \u00bb (\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05bc\u05ea\u05b0\u05d2\u05b7\u05bc\u05dc \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05ea\u05d5\u05b9\u05da\u05b0 \u05d0\u05b8\u05d4\u05b3\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4, <em>va-yitgal be-tokh ohaloh<\/em>). Le verbe h\u00e9breu \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05bc\u05ea\u05b0\u05d2\u05b7\u05bc\u05dc (<em>va-yitgal<\/em>), issu de la racine \u05d2\u05dc\u05d4 (<em>galah<\/em>), signifie \u00ab se d\u00e9couvrir \u00bb, \u00ab \u00eatre d\u00e9couvert \u00bb ou \u00ab \u00eatre expos\u00e9 \u00bb. Il peut \u00e9voquer l\u2019exposition, la vuln\u00e9rabilit\u00e9 et parfois la honte.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019expression \u00ab au milieu de sa tente \u00bb situe l\u2019incident dans un espace priv\u00e9 et familial. Dans la Bible h\u00e9bra\u00efque, la tente \u00e9voque souvent la maison, l\u2019intimit\u00e9 et la protection. La vuln\u00e9rabilit\u00e9 de No\u00e9 dans ce cadre rend donc l\u2019action de Cham d\u2019autant plus grave.<\/p>\n<h3>La transgression de Cham et son ambigu\u00eft\u00e9<\/h3>\n<p>Le texte d\u00e9clare : \u00ab Cham, p\u00e8re de Canaan, vit la nudit\u00e9 de son p\u00e8re \u00bb (\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b7\u05bc\u05e8\u05b0\u05d0 \u05d7\u05b8\u05dd \u05d0\u05b2\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9 \u05db\u05b0\u05e0\u05b7\u05e2\u05b7\u05df \u05d0\u05b5\u05ea \u05e2\u05b6\u05e8\u05b0\u05d5\u05b7\u05ea \u05d0\u05b8\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05d5, <em>va-yar Cham avi Kena\u2019an et ervat aviv<\/em>) et il le rapporta \u00e0 ses deux fr\u00e8res dehors (Gn 9,22). L\u2019expression \u00ab la nudit\u00e9 de son p\u00e8re \u00bb (\u05e2\u05b6\u05e8\u05b0\u05d5\u05b7\u05ea \u05d0\u05b8\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05d5, <em>ervat aviv<\/em>) est au c\u0153ur du d\u00e9bat interpr\u00e9tatif. Le terme \u05e2\u05b6\u05e8\u05b0\u05d5\u05b8\u05d4 (<em>ervah<\/em>), \u00ab nudit\u00e9 \u00bb ou \u00ab honte \u00bb, poss\u00e8de souvent des connotations sexuelles, notamment en L\u00e9vitique 18 et 20, o\u00f9 \u00ab d\u00e9couvrir la nudit\u00e9 \u00bb d\u00e9signe des relations sexuelles illicites.<\/p>\n<p>Plusieurs interpr\u00e9tations ont donc \u00e9t\u00e9 propos\u00e9es :<\/p>\n<p><strong>La vision litt\u00e9rale<\/strong> : Cham aurait simplement vu le corps expos\u00e9 de son p\u00e8re et aurait agi avec irr\u00e9v\u00e9rence, au lieu de pr\u00e9server son honneur.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Une violation sexuelle<\/strong> : certains interpr\u00e8tes envisagent une offense plus grave, mais cette lecture repose surtout sur des d\u00e9ductions, car le texte ne la formule pas explicitement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Un inceste avec la femme de No\u00e9<\/strong> : L\u00e9vitique 20,11 montre que \u00ab d\u00e9couvrir la nudit\u00e9 de son p\u00e8re \u00bb peut signifier coucher avec la femme de son p\u00e8re. Cette hypoth\u00e8se expliquerait pourquoi la mal\u00e9diction vise Canaan, fils de Cham.<\/p>\n<p><strong>La moquerie ou la diffamation<\/strong> : le fait que Cham raconte l\u2019incident \u00e0 ses fr\u00e8res \u00ab dehors \u00bb sugg\u00e8re qu\u2019il a peut-\u00eatre expos\u00e9 publiquement la honte de No\u00e9, au lieu de la couvrir discr\u00e8tement comme le feront Sem et Japhet.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019ambigu\u00eft\u00e9 du texte permet plusieurs lectures, mais le r\u00e9cit souligne clairement que l\u2019acte de Cham constitue une grave transgression. L\u2019identification r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9e de Cham comme \u00ab p\u00e8re de Canaan \u00bb anticipe la mal\u00e9diction de Canaan et relie l\u2019\u00e9pisode au conflit plus large entre Isra\u00ebl et les Canan\u00e9ens.<\/p>\n<h3>La mal\u00e9diction et les b\u00e9n\u00e9dictions<\/h3>\n<p>No\u00e9 r\u00e9pond par une s\u00e9rie de d\u00e9clarations proph\u00e9tiques :<\/p>\n<p><strong>La mal\u00e9diction de Canaan<\/strong> : \u00ab Maudit soit Canaan ! Qu\u2019il soit l\u2019esclave des esclaves de ses fr\u00e8res \u00bb (\u05d5\u05b4\u05d9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9 \u05db\u05b0\u05e0\u05b7\u05e2\u05b7\u05df \u05e2\u05b6\u05d1\u05b6\u05d3 \u05dc\u05b8\u05de\u05d5\u05b9, <em>vi-hi Kena\u2019an eved lamo<\/em>). La mal\u00e9diction tombe non sur Cham directement, mais sur son fils Canaan, ce qui refl\u00e8te une logique ancienne de responsabilit\u00e9 collective et sert aussi d\u2019explication \u00e9tiologique \u00e0 l\u2019assujettissement des Canan\u00e9ens.<\/p>\n<p><strong>La b\u00e9n\u00e9diction de Sem<\/strong> : No\u00e9 b\u00e9nit \u00ab l\u2019\u00c9ternel, Dieu de Sem \u00bb et d\u00e9clare que Canaan sera son serviteur. L\u2019association de YHWH avec Sem pr\u00e9figure la relation d\u2019alliance particuli\u00e8re qui passera par les descendants de Sem, notamment Isra\u00ebl.<\/p>\n<p><strong>La b\u00e9n\u00e9diction de Japhet<\/strong> : No\u00e9 dit : \u00ab Que Dieu agrandisse Japhet \u00bb (\u05d9\u05b7\u05e4\u05b0\u05ea\u05b0\u05bc \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05dc\u05b0\u05d9\u05b6\u05e4\u05b6\u05ea, <em>yaft Elohim le-Yefet<\/em>) et \u00ab qu\u2019il habite dans les tentes de Sem \u00bb. Le verbe \u05d9\u05b7\u05e4\u05b0\u05ea\u05b0\u05bc (<em>yaft<\/em>), \u00ab agrandir \u00bb ou \u00ab \u00e9tendre \u00bb, joue sur le nom \u05d9\u05b6\u05e4\u05b6\u05ea (<em>Yefet<\/em>). Cette b\u00e9n\u00e9diction sugg\u00e8re l\u2019expansion de Japhet et une forme d\u2019association avec les b\u00e9n\u00e9dictions de Sem.<\/p>\n<h3>La signification linguistique des noms<\/h3>\n<p>Dans la Bible h\u00e9bra\u00efque, les noms portent souvent une signification th\u00e9ologique :<\/p>\n<p><strong>Japhet<\/strong> (\u05d9\u05b6\u05e4\u05b6\u05ea, <em>Yefet<\/em>) est associ\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019id\u00e9e d\u2019\u00e9largissement ou d\u2019expansion, en accord avec la b\u00e9n\u00e9diction re\u00e7ue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sem<\/strong> (\u05e9\u05b5\u05c1\u05dd, <em>Shem<\/em>) signifie \u00ab nom \u00bb ou \u00ab renomm\u00e9e \u00bb, ce qui convient \u00e0 son r\u00f4le de porteur d\u2019honneur et de b\u00e9n\u00e9diction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cham<\/strong> (\u05d7\u05b8\u05dd, <em>Cham<\/em>) peut \u00eatre li\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019id\u00e9e de chaleur, mais son nom ne re\u00e7oit pas le m\u00eame jeu de mots positif que ceux de ses fr\u00e8res.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Canaan<\/strong> (\u05db\u05b0\u05e0\u05b7\u05e2\u05b7\u05df, <em>Kena\u2019an<\/em>) peut \u00e9voquer l\u2019abaissement ou la soumission, ce qui correspond \u00e0 la mal\u00e9diction de servitude prononc\u00e9e sur lui.<\/p>\n<h3>Implications th\u00e9ologiques et culturelles<\/h3>\n<p>Th\u00e9ologiquement, Gen\u00e8se 9,20-29 souligne que les actes d\u2019une g\u00e9n\u00e9ration peuvent avoir des cons\u00e9quences sur les g\u00e9n\u00e9rations suivantes. La mal\u00e9diction de Canaan explique l\u2019hostilit\u00e9 entre Isra\u00e9lites et Canan\u00e9ens et pr\u00e9sente ces derniers comme moralement corrompus et destin\u00e9s au jugement. Les b\u00e9n\u00e9dictions accord\u00e9es \u00e0 Sem et Japhet \u00e9tablissent, quant \u00e0 elles, un ordre dans lequel Sem occupe une place centrale dans l\u2019\u00e9conomie de l\u2019alliance.<\/p>\n<p>Culturellement, le passage refl\u00e8te la mani\u00e8re dont Isra\u00ebl percevait les Canan\u00e9ens : comme un peuple associ\u00e9 \u00e0 la d\u00e9viance sexuelle et \u00e0 la corruption morale. En reliant Canaan \u00e0 la transgression de Cham, le texte offre une explication th\u00e9ologique de la future confrontation entre Isra\u00ebl et les habitants de Canaan.<\/p>\n<h3>Conclusion<\/h3>\n<p>Gen\u00e8se 9,20-29 est un r\u00e9cit complexe qui combine art linguistique, profondeur th\u00e9ologique et pol\u00e9mique culturelle. Le texte h\u00e9breu, avec ses jeux de mots et son langage parfois euph\u00e9mique, invite le lecteur \u00e0 r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir \u00e0 la nature de la faute de Cham et aux cons\u00e9quences des paroles de No\u00e9.
