The Hebrew Words Studies (II)

You loved the last Hebrew word study so much, I’m back with three more connections worth discovering. Grab a cup of coffee (they say it’s good for you if you drink it before 2PM!) and enjoy!

1. Kaved / Kavod

כָּבֵד / כָּבוֹד
“heavy” / “honor, glory”

For readers who cannot read Hebrew yet, listen to the similarity: KaVeD and KaVoD.

Both belong to the Hebrew consonantal family כ־ב־ד (K-V-D), associated with the idea of weight or heaviness. This gives us an interesting doorway into the biblical idea of kavod, usually translated “glory” or “honor.”

In our culture, we sometimes think of glory primarily as brightness or splendor. Those ideas certainly appear in Scripture, especially when God’s glory becomes visibly manifest. But the Hebrew word also carries the sense of weightiness, importance, and honor.

This helps us understand the commandment to “honor” (kabed) your father and your mother (Exod 20:12). The command does not simply mean to feel affection for them. Parents are to be treated as weighty, as people whose place in our lives matters.

2. Qadosh / Miqdash

קָדוֹשׁ / מִקְדָּשׁ
“holy” / “sanctuary”

Here the relationship is even easier to see. Qadosh and miqdash belong to the same Hebrew family built around the consonants ק־ד־שׁ (Q-D-Sh), the family of holiness.

Qadosh means “holy.” Miqdash refers to a sanctuary, a holy or sacred place.

This connection appears beautifully in Exod 25:8 when God tells Israel:

“Let them make Me a sanctuary (miqdash), that I may dwell among them.”

The sanctuary is connected with holiness because it has been set apart for God’s presence and purposes. The objects within it are holy. The priests who serve there are consecrated.

3. Racham / Rechem

רָחַם / רֶחֶם
“to have compassion” / “womb”

This may be the most beautiful pair of the three.

Listen to the words: RaCHaM and ReCHeM. The consonants ר־ח־ם (R-CH-M) connect a Hebrew family of words associated with compassion with rechem, “womb.” The precise historical relationship between these usages should not be pressed too far, but the Hebrew association is ancient and deeply suggestive.

That becomes even more striking when we remember rechem, womb. A womb protects life that is utterly dependent. The child does not earn the mother’s care. It is surrounded, nourished, carried, and protected before it can offer anything in return. This gives us a powerful image for thinking about biblical compassion.

Yeshua and These Three Words

Jesus draws all three threads together. He carries kavod, weight and glory, yet He does not grasp it for Himself; He empties Himself and takes the form of a servant (Phil 2:6-7), so that His weightiness is revealed most fully at the cross. He is Himself the true miqdash. He tells the Jerusalem leaders, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up,” speaking of His own body (John 2:19-21). Holiness is no longer a place Israel visits; it is a Person Israel meets. And He embodies racham. Moved by rechem-deep compassion, He heals the sick, weeps at Lazarus’s tomb, and welcomes the vulnerable. In Jesus, glory, holiness, and compassion stop being separate categories.

Conclusion

The invitation is not merely to a language but to a clearer view of reality. These Hebrew roots are not curiosities. They reveal how the biblical writers actually understood the world. Kavod is weight, real substance, not empty praise. Holiness has a location, not just a concept. Compassion is physically shaped like a womb, designed to nurture what cannot yet survive alone.

Translation necessarily smooths over these connections. But when you see them for yourself, the text gains a new depth. And this is only a sample. The Hebrew Bible is filled with these doorways, waiting to be opened.
